COLONEL FOOTBALL GETS NOTICED NATIONALLY

9/15/2009 1:45:11 PM

After starting the season 2-0, including a 37-10 over No. 18 Montclair State, the Wilkes University football team has received votes in the latest d3football.com top-25 poll. The Colonels recent success marks their best start since the 2006 season.

The Colonels received 16 votes and along with Delaware Valley, which received 67 votes, are the only two MAC schools listed in the poll. Montclair State dropped out of the poll, but still received two votes. The poll is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, sports information directors and media members from across the country and is published weekly.

Wilkes opened the season with an impressive 14-12 come-from-behind win over Muhlenberg where defensive back Kevin Gerhart (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) recorded a game-high 15 tackles to go along with an interception and two pass break-ups. For his efforts, he was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week.

The Colonels are idle this week, but will hit the road for the first time this season on Sept. 26 when they head to Newport News, Va. to face Christopher Newport. The Captains escaped with a 21-20 win last season in Wilkes-Barre and are currently receiving three points in the d3football.com poll.
