FIVE NAMED TO SPRING SPORTSMANSHIP TEAM

6/1/2010 4:20:20 PM

Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area), Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers), Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial), Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and Katrina Lynn were all honored by the conference office this past week, as all were named to the Spring Middle Atlantic Conference Winter Sportsmanship Teams for their conduct both on and off the playing field.

The teams include a player from each conference school who has demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season. The players are selected by the players and coaches from their respective schools.

McAndrew ended his record-breaking career at Wilkes with 32 hits and four doubles this past baseball season, while starting every game at the shortstop position. He also knocked in 13 RBI's while hitting .281 at the plate and a .966 fielding percentage.

Stefanelli had yet another outstanding softball season for the Lady Colonels, hitting .429 with 42 hits, 15 doubles, 17 RBI's and 63 total bases. She started every game for Wilkes at the shortstop position while recording a .938 fielding percentage.

Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) also had a record-setting year for the Wilkes lacrosse team, recording 233 saves this past year, including a school record 25 against King's in her last game of the season. She had a .487 save percentage while playing every minute for the Lady Colonels in goal this past season.

Nolt was a steady force for the Colonels on the tennis court, leading the team in wins in dual matches with 16 from both the second and third position. He was a perfect 10-0 from the third spot, and went 13-6 in doubles play from the number one position. He played a crucial role on a Colonel team that won its third straight Freedom Conference Championship, and its first ever NCAA Tournament victory.

Lynn had an excellent first year on the tennis court for the Lady Colonels, going 14-2 from the number two position in singles play, and 13-3 in doubles play. She was undefeated in conference play, and was a large reason why Wilkes was able to grab its fourth consecutive conference championship, as well as its first ever NCAA Tournament victory.
