HOLYK, BLACHOWSKI SWEEP WEEKLY FREEDOM TENNIS AWARDS

ANNVILLE, PA – Wilkes University senior Amanda Holyk (Scranton, PA/Scranton Prep) and sophomore Brendon Blachowski (Newtown, PA /Council Rock North) were named Freedom Conference Tennis Women's and Men's Players of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

It marks the third straight week a Wilkes duo has been named to the weekly awards.

Holyk led the Lady Colonels (13-2) squad to a 2-1 week going a perfect 3-0 in her singles and doubles matches. She began with a straight set win at No. 4 against King's 6-0, 6-0 and followed with a 6-1, 6-1 winner against Stevenson.

Holyk was one of two singles winners for Wilkes in the match against New York University (NYU) posting a 6-1, 6-1 decision. In doubles play she teamed with Olivia Hewison (Port Crane, NY/Chenango Valley) at No. 3 to go 3-0 allowing just eight games through three matches.

“Amanda has been such a major contributor to our team this spring,” said head coach Chris Leicht. “She has also improved so much in doubles, combining with (Olivia) Hewison to make a very strong No. 3 doubles team.”  “Amanda's best matches of the week were against NYU where she won in both singles and doubles against a very strong team,” he added.

Blachowski was strong in the Wilkes (11-3) lineup all week competing at No. 6/4 singles and No. 3 doubles. He went 3-0 in singles matches and teamed with Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) to go 2-0 at No. 3 doubles.

He opened the week with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 against King's and followed with a straight set winner (6-0, 6-1) at No. 4 singles against Stevenson. Blachowski was the lone singles winner against NYU, claiming a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 victory at No. 6 against the Violets Sunday.

“I am so excited for Brendon to win this award as he is such a hard-working and dedicated member of our team,” commented Leicht. “Brendon has always been a very strong doubles player and has combined with (Clarke) Freeman at No. 3 to make a very formidable team.” “Also, Brendon has improved his singles game this year having an amazing week of tennis, highlighted by his big wins in doubles and singles over NYU,” he added.

The Wilkes women's team returns to action Thursday with a home match against Muhlenberg at 3:30 p.m. before both squads travel to Division II Bloomsburg University Friday for a pair of matches at 6:00 p.m.
