WILKES TENNIS TEAMS TO HOST FREEDOM SEMIFINAL MATCHUPS

WILKES-BARRE – Both Wilkes University tennis teams will host the semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament as the men will host Arcadia University Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and the women will host Stevenson on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

The 13-3 Colonels are led by Steven Wilson (Bronx, NY/JFK) who is 14-9 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league competition. Alex Makos (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) is 14-9 in singles play and the two have combined for a 19-7 doubles record going 5-0 in the league.

Michael Kranz (Depew, NY/Lancaster Central) is 18-8 overall while Max Appello (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) is 22-2 in singles play. Brendon Blachowski (Newtown, PA /Council Rock North) (17-6), Brandon Helfrich (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) (15-1), and Connor Peckham (Warminster, PA/Central Bucks East) (16-5) have helped Wilkes maintain a perfect 6-0 record in the Freedom Conference.

Arcadia is 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference, making their first playoff appearance since the 08-09 season. The Knights are led in singles flights by Marc Ruggia (7-3), Darren Stochmal (9-2), and Hermino Quinones (7-2).

Earlier this season, Wilkes beat the Knights 9-0. The Colonels are striving after their sixth straight Freedom title.

The Wilkes women's tennis team enters Wednesday's match with Stevenson with a 16-2 overall record remaining 6-0 in Freedom action. The Lady Colonels are led by three-time Freedom Player of the Year Melanie Nolt (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) (17 -2), Katie Lynn (Berwick, PA/Berwick) (17 -4), Ally Kristofco (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) (18-2), Amanda Holyk (Scranton, PA/Scranton Prep) (15 -0), Ana English (15 -5), and Amanda Rossi (Fogelsville, PA/Parkland) (12- 2) in singles competition.

Lynn and Nolt are 15-3 in doubles flights going 6-0 in the conference. English and Kristofco are 15-0 overall and 6-0 in conference doubles matches.

Stevenson enters the match with a 5-7 overall record going 3-3 in the Freedom. They are led by Katie Fersch who is 4-9 in singles matches going 3-3 in league play. Svetlana Widell is 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference while Jordan Rupard is 4-8 overall and2-3 in the conference.

Earlier in the season, the Lady Colonels swept the Mustangs 9-0. The Lady Colonels are looking for their seventh straight Freedom title.
