18 WILKES BASEBALL/SOFTBALL GREATS NAMED TO MAC SPRING ALL-CENTURY TEAMS
ANNVILLE, PA – Eighteen Wilkes University baseball/softball greats were named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Spring All-Century Teams as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. Thirteen former Colonel baseball standouts were selected to the teams, while five former Lady Colonel softball stars garnered selections.
The All-Century baseball teams were broken down into five eras. Wilkes garnered selections in four of the five eras. Below is a complete list of Colonels who were selected to the teams according to each era:
1912-1973
Joe Wiendl – All-MAC All Star hitting over .300 for his career including over .400 his senior season in 1969; One of just three jerseys retired (#44); Member of the Wilkes Athletic Hall of Fame (1993 class).
Ted Sokolowski – Dominant pitcher for the Colonels ranking third all-time in strikeouts (238), eighth in winning percentage (.750), second in innings pitched (227), fifth in complete games (16), second in wins (21), third in games started (32), and eighth in earned run average (ERA) (2.26).
Ted Yeager – Three-year starter (co-captain senior year) setting records for most stolen bases in a game, season, and career as well as walks, runs scored and doubles; Earned first team All-MAC All-Star honors in 1971; One of just three jerseys retied (#21); Member of the Wilkes Athletic Hall of Fame (1993 class).
Dave Kaschak – Three-time All-MAC catcher, including a First Team All-MAC selection in 1971; A .344 lifetime hitter, led the Colonels to a 47-14 four-year record and one MAC Championship; Named 1971 Wilkes Athlete of the Year; MAC batting champion in 1969; Team captain in 1971; Named NCAA District II All-American; Member of the Wilkes Athletic Hall of Fame (1997 class).
1974-86
Brian Gorski – Speedster ranking fourth all-time in school history in stolen bases (56); stole 19 bases during the 1985 season ranking ninth all-time in a single season.
Chick Andrewscavage – Ranks in the top ten in school history in several offensive (hitting) categories including seventh in doubles (33), eighth in RBI (110) and seventh in RBI per-game (1.02).
Dave Trethaway – Holds the seventh all-time best career batting average hitting .389 from 1973 through 1976; hit .479 during the 1975 season ranking second in a single season at Wilkes.
Jerry Antosh – Boasted a .848 slugging percentage in 1981, good for fourth all-time in a single season in Wilkes history.
Jim Stehle – Four-year starting pitcher ranking second all-time in career strikeouts (263), third in winning percentage (.810), second in ERA (1.50), tenth in innings pitched (180), ninth in games started (28), sixth in complete games (15), and sixth in wins (17).
Steve Leskiw – Holds single season records ranking sixth in home runs (9 in 1976), sixth in triples (5 in 1975), and ninth in RBI per-game (1.33 in 1975).
1987-93
Rob Pietrzyk – Batted in over 1.04 runs per-game ranking sixth all-time in school history.
Tom Salzberg – Starting pitcher ranking seventh all-time in innings pitched (190.2), third in games started (32), and second in complete games (19).
2004-2012
Tom Buckler – Four-year starting pitcher going 16-17 in 207.2 innings pitched striking out 131 career batters; His nine wins in 2009 is tied for the school's single season record.
Five former Wilkes softball stars were selected to the four distinct eras on the century team. Below is a complete list of Lady Colonels who were selected to the teams according to each era:
1912-88
Lisa Gigliello – Two-time All-Conference (Northwest) outfielder in 1984 and 1985.
1989-93
Lisa Balestrini – Named All-Conference (Northwest) infielder in 1989.
1994-03
Robyn Mendygral – Three-time All-Freedom selection at shortstop including Most Valuable Player honors in 1999; In the top five in school history in 14 different statistical categories including hits, runs, doubles, triples, and RBI; Named to the 2012 Wilkes Athletics Hall of Fame.
2004-2012
Laurie Agresti – Four-time All-Freedom selection and named Freedom Player of the Year all four seasons from 2004-2007; School's all-time leader in career wins (61), ERA (0.95), shutouts (34), innings pitched (587.1), and strikeouts (1,040).
Nadine Taylor – Three-time All-Freedom selection from 2004-2006; Named co-Player of the Year with Agresti in 2005; Ranks sixth in school history in hits (131), third in triples (8), sixth in doubles (25), third in sacrifice hits (13), fifth in stolen bases (38), sixth in slugging percentage (.485), and eighth in walks (27).
