ST. DAVIDS – The Wilkes University men's soccer team upped their Freedom Conference record to 3-0 on Saturday by going on the road and defeating Eastern University by a score of 2-1.

With the win, the Colonels are now 7-5-1 overall, while the Eagles see their record slide to 6-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.

Wilkes would take control just 19 minutes into the game when Sean Stitt (Allentown/Emmaus) was able to find the back of the net on an unassisted play to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.

However, it would not take long for Eastern to answer when Braden Gross took a pass from Phil Mantua at the 28:07 mark to level the score at 1-1.

The score would remain notched at 1-1 until the 78:23 mark when Rusty Helwig (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) beat Eagles goal keeper Michael Dorsch to give Wilkes the 2-1 advantage they would not relinquish.

For the game, both teams had nine shots while Eastern held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. TJ Baloga (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) earned the victory in goal for the Colonels by making six saves on the afternoon, while Dorsch stopped five shots of his own in the losing effort.

Wilkes will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to DeSales University with the game scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m.
