SHORT-HANDED WILKES WINS AGAIN

Lady Colonels improve to 10-0

10/2/2008 5:35:33 PM

Box Score

Despite playing without its top scorer and a defender, Wilkes University recorded another shutout, defeating FDU-Florham 2-0. Alyssa Koncelik (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and Alyssa Davis (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) were both out for the Lady Colonels because of injury.

The win puts the Lady Colonels at 10-0 overall and 2-0 in Freedom Conference play and marks the seventh shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) recorded her third-straight shutout and has not allowed a goal since Sept. 9 when the Lady Colonels defeated Cabrini 2-1 on the road.

Both of Wilkes' goals came off penalty corners with Diana Wright (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) scoring first at the 29 minute mark on a pass from Gina Elmy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R.). Wright's third goal of the season proved to be enough as the Lady Colonel defense held the Devils to just four shots and three shots on goal. “I think the first half is the best I have ever seen us play,” head coach Sara Myers said. “Our communication and support around the ball has really improved for us and it showed today.”

Brittany Sines (Afton, N.Y./Afton Central) scored her second goal of the season at the 69 minute mark to make it 2-0 which proved to be more than enough for Davenport.

The win for Wilkes marks the first in three years over FDU. “We are improving each game which is what you want to see. Hopefully we continue to play like we are playing,” Myers said.

Wilkes will be back in action Saturday when it hosts Elizabethtown at noon.
