Box Score

The Wilkes University men's soccer team went up 3-0 but was not able to hold on as Misericordia broke a 3-3 tie in double overtime to take a 4-3 win over the Colonels.

Wilkes was slapped with seven yellow cards and one red card, while Misericordia was given one yellow in a game that saw both teams combine for 43 fouls. Bret Osswald (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) received his first yellow card at the 48-minute mark before being ejected for a second yellow card, which automatically becomes a red, with less than 12 minutes to play in regulation.

Doug Moore (Doylestown, Pa./New-Hope Solebury) put the Colonels on the board first on a header off a free kick from Osswald with just over four minutes into the game. The Colonels took their 1-0 lead into halftime before Osswald gave the Colonels a 2-0 advantage after scoring a goal with passes from Greg Miller (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) and Ryan Phillips (Beach Lake, Pa./Honesdale) at the 46-minute mark. Miller gave Wilkes a commanding 3-0 lead three minutes later when he scored on a pass from Ed Zulkoski (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood)

The Wilkes defense was called for an illegal slide tackle inside the box to give Misericordia a penalty kick that Max Campbell converted that put the Cougars on the board. Tyler Mensch then became a one-man wrecking crew as he scored back-to-back goals in regulation, including his second that came at the 87-minute mark. He would also score the game-winner in double-overtime off a pass from Cody Hack.

The loss dropped the Colonels to 8-7-2 overall and 4-2-1 in Freedom Conference play, while Misericordia remained perfect in league play and stand at 6-0-1.

Wilkes will hit the road to face FDU-Florham for its final regular season match of the season before entering the Freedom Conference Championships.
