WILKES WRESTLING WINS A PAIR IN TRI-MATCH

Improve to 6-0 on the year

11/22/2008 6:48:09 PM

The No. 24 Wilkes wrestling team was impressive in its tri-match, winning both matches by a combined score of 54-19 with victories over No. 27 NYU and McDaniel.

In the Colonels 27-10 win over NYU, Wilkes won all but three matches, including three major decisions. At 125, Shawn Farnham put the Colonels on the board with a 9-0 major decision win over Kyle Christensen, giving them an early 4-0 advantage.

At 133, Josh Pauling (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) won his bout in a major decision (11-3) over Clement Bommier to pad the Colonel lead. Erik Smith (Danville, Pa./Danville), competing at 149, took a 6-1 decision over John Dack, while Frank Heffernan (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh), ranked No. 10 nationally, defeated Naum Shuminov 3-1 to give Wilkes a 14-10 lead. Buddy Gouger (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) won his match at 184 over Steven Massey in a 7-4 decision, while No. 9 Zach Pizzaro (Easton, PA/Easton) won his match in a major decision (11-2) over Alex Chianurashvili.

Former Colonel football player Jake Weinrich (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny), coming off a victory last week, took a 9-3 decision over Mark Shirian to close out the match.

In the 30-9 win over McDaniel, all but two Colonels won their bouts, three of which came in major decisions and one by forfeit. Farnham captured his second-consecutive major decision with a 10-0 win over Sean Ensign. Pauling, competing at 133, would take a 5-2 win over Peter Caruso, give Wilkes a 7-0 overall lead.

At 149, Tom Anderson trailed nearly the entire bout until he was able to pull a reversal with under 10 seconds left to take a 19-18 win over Brent Lowe.

At 157, Richard Sparks (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P Schalick) would extend the Colonels lead to 18-0 with a 10-2 major decision over Matt Peters. Heffernan won his match over Courtney Nightengale, 9-4, while Chris Smith (Wantage, NJ/High Point) defeated Will Yeo, 12-10 at 197.

The wins improve the Colonels to 6-0 this season and will be back in action Friday, Dec. 5 when they head to Grantham to compete in the Messiah Petrofes Tournament.
