Quarterback Rob Johnson surpasses the 300-yard barrier for first time in his career

DELAWARE VALLEY USES SECOND HALF PUSH TO GET BY COLONELS

Delaware valley scored 21 of its 28 points in the second half, including 14 in the fourth quarter to take a 28-20 win over Wilkes University marking the first time the Aggies have won at Ralston Field since 1991.

Wilkes started off strong, scoring 13 unanswered points using a mix of both the run and the pass to drive through the Aggie defense. The Colonels finished with a season-high 373 yards of total offense, marking the first time they have surpassed the 300-yard barrier this year. Quarterback Rob Johnson (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had a career-day as well, completing 27-of-47 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

The Colonels wasted little time getting on the board, traveling 65 yards on nine plays capped off with a four-yard Harry Reese (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scamper for his only score of the day. The drive was kept alive after Johnson found Jason Prushinksi for an 11-yard reception on a third-and-11 play from their own 34-yard line. Wilkes would covert a second third down in the drive when Zach Tivald had a career-long 33-yard run to put the Colonels on the Delaware Valley four yard line. One play later Reese would give Wilkes the early lead.

Wilkes would make it 13-0 with 5:52 to go in the half when Johnson found Gennaro Zangardi (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston) from 19 yards out that capped off a 10-play, 79-yard drive that took just over three-and-a-half minutes. The Aggies helped the Colonels in the drive as they were called for a pass interference penalty on a third-and-10 play that gave Wilkes a fresh set of downs from its own 47-yard line. After the touchdown, the Colonels were flagged on two consecutive plays on the extra points attempt which put the ball back to the 20. Freshman kicker Chris Horn (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) would miss the unconventional PAT, marking his first unsuccessful attempt of the season.

On its last possession of the half, Delaware Valley's Mike Isgro hooked up with Joe Gionfriddo for a 34-yard scoring strike with 47 second to go in the second quarter to pull within six.

The Aggies took the lead for good when Isgro ran in from a yard out on a quarterback sneak with 6:08 to play in the third quarter. Isgro completed 12-of-18 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

On it first possession of the fourth quarter, Wilkes threatened after a 26-yard strike from Johnson to Prushinksi, but a play later, Charles Squitiere picked off a pass on his own 28-yard line and ran it back 53 yards. Squitiere would eventually be tackled at the Wilkes 12-yard line, but an illegal blocking call put the ball on the 29. It took just two plays before Isgro found Matt Mariano from 26-yards out to make it 21-13.

Delaware Valley used 10 plays to score on its next possession, nine of which were on the ground before Isgro would hook up with Brandon Fox for a 46-yard bomb to give the Aggies a 28-13 advantage with 5:32 to play.

The Colonels would keep the game close on their next possession when Johnson found Sean Madden (Dunmore, Pa./Bishop O'Hara) from 20-yards out. Wilkes used just 1:50 off the clock, traveling 58 yards in 10 plays to pull within eight with 1:50 to go.

Wilkes had one last chance to score with seven seconds to play, but a fumble at its own 32-yard line as time expired ruined any chance to tie the game.

The Colonels will close out the regular season next week when they head to Chester to face Widener at 1 p.m.
