Box Score

The Wilkes University men's soccer team opened the 2008 season in fine fashion thanks to Greg Miller (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood)'s two goals, leading the Colonels to a 3-0 win over Ursinus.

All three of Wilkes' goals came in the second half, all within six minutes of each other.  Miller's first goal came at the 46 minute mark on a pass from Jonathan Kushner, followed by his second goal at the 50 minute mark with an assist from Ed Zulkoski (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood).

Bret Osswald (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) made it 3-0 at the 53 minute mark when he converted a penalty kick after a Wilkes player was taken down in the box.

The Colonel defense held the Bears to just two shots on goal and eight total shots.  “Our defense played really well today,” head coach Phil Wingert said.  “We were able to get enough guys behind the ball which gives us a big advantage.”  While Ursinus was unable to generate any offense, the Colonels had 17 shots, including nine shots on goal.

“I thought we played hard today and we made good adjustments.  Our back six played much better in the second half,” Wingert said.

The Colonels (1-0) will remain at home tomorrow with a 2 p.m. date with Arcadia.
