Box Score

The Wilkes men's soccer team won its Freedom Conference opener by shutting out Manhattanville at Ralston Field, 3-0. The win marks the second-straight shutout for the Colonels.

The victory improved Wilkes to 5-4 overall and all five wins have come by shutouts.

Sean Vona (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) hit the game-winner at the 31-minute mark when he converted a penalty kick after a Wilkes player was tripped in the box. Vona's shot hit the back of the net on the lower right side and proved to be enough as the Wilkes defense held tight on Manhattanville's five shots on goal.

The rain-drenched game saw six Manhattanville players receive yellow cards, five of which came in the first half.

Rusty Helwig (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) made it 2-0 in the first half on a pass from Greg Miller (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) when his shot hit goalkeeper Jerry Tellier before finding the back of the net. Greg Miller (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) finished out the scoring at the 58 minute mark when his shot from just outside the penalty box rolled past Tellier's left side for the goal.

Wilkes had nine total shots, four of which were on goal and the two teams combined for 46 penalties and 12 corner kicks.
