WILLIAMSPORT -    The Wilkes University wrestling team was impressive in the first day of the Budd Whitehill Duals, winning its first three matches with wins over Case Western, John Carroll and host Lycoming. 

 

The Colonels, ranked No. 16 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, started the day with a convincing 37-6 win over Case Western. Wilkes won all but one bout in the event including pins by Josh Pauling (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) at the 133-pound division and Zach Pizarro (Easton, Pa./Easton), who is ranked No. 9 nationally at the 197-pound division. Pizarro, who won three matches on the day, pinned his opponent in the 285-pound class. 

 

In the second bout of the day, Wilkes took down John Carroll 25-14 behind three pins, including a 59-second pin my Buddy Gouger (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) at 184. Shaun Farnham (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker), who won three bouts on the day, opened the contest with a 5-4 win over Eliw Naoum before Anthony Dattolo (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) pinned Clarence Semple in 2:09. Frank Heffernan (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh), ranked No. 10 nationally at 174, won his bout 6-4 over Devin Jurczak. Pizarro competed at his normal 197 weight class, defeating Jim Nemunaitis 13-2. Gouger won three matches on the day as well.

 

In the final bout of the day, Gouger picked up a technical fall against Russ Korbul, winning 20-5 in 6:03, to lead the Colonels to a 20-15 win over Lycoming. 

 

Farnham opened the bout with a 4-0 win over Stephen Hinton before Pauling defeated Andrew Lewis, 5-1 at 133. After back-to-back Wilkes losses, James Histed (Lake Ariel, Pa./Bishop O'Hara) took down Zach Frederick at the 157-pound weight class. Lycoming would win at 165, but the Colonels bounced back to win three of the final four matches of the day. Pizarro would win his third contest of the day – a 5-2 decision over Bryan Kopesky. 

 

Wilkes improved to 9-2-1 on the year and will take on Ithaca at 10:30 a.m. 

 

“We wrestled with a lot more heart and pride than we did last week and it showed,” head coach Jon Laudenslager said. “Ithaca is ranked eighth nationally. We have battled them the last couple of years. I expect it to be a good match. Hopefully we can get passed them to get to the finals,” Laudenslager said.
