Box Score
The Wilkes University men's soccer team won their second Freedom Conference match this past Saturday, defeating Eastern 2-1 at Ralston Field in senior day.
Wilkes did all of its scoring in the first period, started by senior
Sean Vona (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) on a long assist by
T.J. Brandt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) in the 18th minute. The Colonels would tack on another score in the 35th minute when another senior
Arthur Jankowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) found the back of the net on a pass from
Sean Stitt (Allentown/Emmaus), putting Wilkes up 2-0 going into the half.
In the second period the Eagles put pressure on the Wilkes defense, eventually scoring in the 64th minute on a goal by Phil Mantua. Eastern would have other opportunities to score, but solid goalkeeping by
Kaleb Smith (Beavertown, Pa./Medd-West) and steady defensive play by the Colonels helped relinquish the lead for Wilkes, securing the victory 2-1.
Wilkes fired 15 shots on the day, while the Eagles got off 14 shot attempts. Smith had three saves in the game, winning his sixth game of the year.
With the win the Colonels advance to 6-8 (2-2-0) on the season, and will look to improve upon their conference record when they host King's on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Ralston Field. That game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
