The Wilkes University men's soccer team hosted FDU-Florham on Saturday, defeating the Devils by a final score of 1-0. Each team had its opportunities, but solid defense and goaltending allowed Wilkes to come out with the victory.
In the first half each team fired two shots on goal, but neither could find the back of the nets.
In the second half Wilkes scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute when
Sean Vona (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) centered a pass to
Joe Brennan (Oakdale, CT/Montville) who kicked it in for his second goal of the season. The Devils would keep the pressure on, putting four more shots on goal in the half, but goalie
Kaleb Smith (Beavertown, Pa./Medd-West) saved them all, ensuring the third victory in a row for the Colonels.
With the win Wilkes moves to 5-5 on the year, and 1-0 in conference play. They will look to continue the winning streak when they travel to Glassboro, N.J. to face Rowan in non-conference action. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
