The Wilkes University men's soccer squad hosted Baptist Bible College on Thursday, scoring three goals in the second period to break a five-game skid, winning 4-1. With the victory, Wilkes improves to 3-5 on the season.
The game would begin with Baptist Bible scoring within the first five minutes when Joseph Peterson headed in a corner kick from Joshua Pyper to put the Defenders up, 1-0. Wilkes would answer seven minutes later on a goal by
Greg Miller (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood), assisted by
Arthur Jankowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood). The rest of the period remained scoreless despite Wilkes firing 15 shots upon Baptist Bible defense.
In the second half it was all Colonel offense, as sophomore midfielder
Ed Zulkoski (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored two goals within 12 minutes of each other, one on a pass from
Patrick McDonald (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and another off a goalie deflection from a Miller shot. Miller would add one more goal on a penalty kick in the 78th minute to secure the victory for the Colonels, 4-1.
Wilkes rattled off 36 total shots in the game, four times as many as the Defenders. Goalie
Kaleb Smith (Beavertown, Pa./Medd-West) allowed one score on the day, while saving four shots on goal.
The Colonels will look to sustain their momentum when they host Susquehanna Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Ralston Field. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
