The Wilkes University men's soccer team has turned their season around, defeating Susquehanna on Wednesday en rout to their second victory in a row. Midfielder Sean Vona (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) converted on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left to secure the win, 2-1.

Wilkes was the first to score in the contest on a goal by Josh Olzinski (Nanticoke/Nanticoke) off of a Greg Miller (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) throw-in. Arthur Jankowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) and Miller were in on the assist. The Crusaders answered four minutes later on a goal by Shane Atha, and the two teams went into the break tied, 1-1.

The second half saw plenty of action, as Wilkes and Susquehanna combined for seven shots on goal. In the 80th minute Vona dribbled the ball into the penalty box where he was fouled. He then kicked in the penalty shot to the right side of the goal to put the Colonels up 2-1. Susquehanna would fight for chances to score, but solid Colonel defense kept the Crusaders out of the net in the second half. With the win Wilkes improves to 4-5 on the season.

Wilkes was out-shot by the Crusaders 19-8, and goalkeeper Kaleb Smith (Beavertown, Pa./Medd-West) recorded seven saves on the day.

The Colonels will attempt to keep their winning streak alive when they host FDU-Florham on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Ralston Field. That game will begin at 12:00 p.m.
