The Wilkes University men's soccer team fell to the Neumann University Knights in a tight battle on Sunday, 2-1. The Colonels surrendered two first-period goals that would prove to be the difference, as neither team was able to score in the second half.
Wilkes struck first 15 minutes into the game when sophomore T.J. Brandt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) dribbled through multiple Knight defenders and scored on a shot from the right side, putting the Colonels up 1-0.
For the rest of the half Neumann put on the pressure and was able to score twice. Their first goal was scored by Sergio Garcia on a pass from Lee Collins in the 26th minute. Fifteen minutes later Zach Sell found Joe Larkins who knocked in what would be the game-winning goal for the Knights.
In the second half Wilkes put pressure on Neumann goalie Zac Ratliff, particularly near the end of the game. Ratliff faced two shots on goal in the final ten minutes, saving both and securing the Knight victory.
Wilkes fired 21 shots on the day, including six on goal, but were only to able to pierce the Neumann defense for one point. Wilkes also surrendered their first goals of the season in the contest.
The Colonels will try to come back from their first loss when they host Muhlenberg on Thursday, Sept. 10 at Ralston Field.
