The Wilkes University women's soccer team had their first home game of the season against Scranton University Wednesday. The Lady Colonels fell behind 3-0 in the first period and were never able to rally, losing by a final score of 4-2.
It didn't take long for the Royals to get on the board, scoring in the third minute of the match on a goal by Eileen Sodano. Scranton would add two more goals before halftime on 12 shots. Meanwhile, Wilkes was only able to get off one shot in the half, and goalie
Sarah Shetler (Pequea, Pa./Penn Manor) was busy, saving five Royal shots.
In the second half Wilkes was able to narrow the lead to one on goals by
Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere) and
Ashley Thorpe (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall), but with 16 minutes left Scranton would score one more time, putting the Royals up for good, 4-2.
Hallowell recorded her second goal of the season as well as an assist in the contest, while Thorpe scored her first goal of the year. Wilkes was out shot 15-7 on the day, keeping goalies Shetler and
Brooke Keister (Penns Creek, Pa./Midd-West) busy in front of the nets as they combined for six saves. With the loss Wilkes falls to 2-2 on the season.
The Lady Colonels will look to bounce back when they travel to Moravian Saturday Sept. 12 to challenge the Greyhounds.
