WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University fell to SUNY Cortland 1-0 tonight in a late season non-conference women's soccer matchup at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
Cortland struck first, getting a goal from Bridgette DeSantis in the fifth minute from 20 yards out. For the rest of the half, neither team was able to establish much control as the ball stayed in the middle of the field, moving back and forth over the 50-yard line.
The play stayed the same through 20 minutes of the second half until the Lady Colonels threatened. Drawing the Red Dragons keeper out,
Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, NJ, Belvidere) won a scramble seven yards in front of the net but her shot was saved. The rebound went out 20 yards where
Jen Downey (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) placed a nice shot to the top of the net but Cortland's Stacey Wood, backing up her goalie, knocked it away.
Cortland controlled the rest of the half, as Wilkes wasn't able to hang on to the ball offensively.
Samantha Rohn (Levittown, Neshaminy) and
Sam Lindo (Hazlet, NJ, Raritan) combined in goal for the Lady Colonels for two saves.
The Lady Colonels will wrap up their regular season schedule at home on Saturday evening when they host Misericordia. The game will be for the final spot in the Freedom Conference playoffs. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
