WILKES-BARRE, PA. The Wilkes University wrestling team hosted the John Reese Duals on Saturday, competing against four other schools on the afternoon. The Colonels defeated their first three opponents, Hunter, Lycoming, and Stevens Institute of Technology, but fell to Centenary in their last matchup.

In the first round of action, Wilkes took on Metropolitan Conference foe Hunter College, ultimately defeating the Hawks 30-10. Eight of the ten wrestlers for the Colonels were victorious in the match, including freshman Matt Transue (Stroudsburg, Stroudsburg) who recorded a pin against his opponent in the 184 bout. Other Colonels who were victorious included Scott Mantua (Clarksville, MD, River Hill), Seth Bartlett (Mongtomery, Montgomery), Ryan Wilson (Manasquan, NJ, Wall Township), Nick Lynch (Horsham, Hatboro-Horsham), Raymond Dungee (Morristown, NJ, Morristown), Dave Oberrender (Freeland, Hazelton), and Michael Shannon (Montvale, NJ, Northern Valley Regional).

In their second match, the Colonels defeated Lycoming College 23-10, winning seven of the 10 bouts. Ben Marich (Kempton, Northwestern Lehigh) had a spectacular performance at 165, defeating his opponent 16-3 in his first match of the day. Other winners for Wilkes included Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD, Winters Mill), Mark Uliano (Hazle Township, Hazelton), Jared Brownmiller (Lehighton, Lehighton), Anthony Dattolo (Succasunna, NJ, Roxbury), Dustin Stough (Friendsville, MD, Northern Garrett), and Transue.

Next the Colonels had Stevens Institute of Technology, who they defeated 24-12, winning six of the 10 bouts. AJ Fisher (Villas, NJ, St. Augustine Prep) had a pin for Wilkes in the 141 pound matchup, while senior Chris Smith (Wantage, NJ, High Point) defeated his opponent 5-1 for his first victory on the day. Other victors for Wilkes included Mendoza, Dattolo, Nathan White (Ellicott City, MD, River Hill), and Transue.

In the last match of the day, Wilkes took on Centenary College in another Metro Conference matchup. The Colonels were only able to win three bouts in the match, falling 24-12 for their only loss on the day. Oberrender was able to pin his opponent at 197, while Dattolo and Smith also collected victories.

Wilkes is now 3-1 on the season.

The wrestling team will be back in action when it heads to Alliance, Ohio to compete in the Mount Union Duals. The first match will begin at 11:00 a.m. against Mount St. Josephs.
