Final Brackets
WILKES-BARRE – Sophomores
Dustin Stough (Friendsville, MD, Northern Garrett) and
Nathan White (Ellicott City, MD, River Hill) along with freshman
Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD, Winters Mill) won individual titles and seven other Colonels finished in the top three as Wilkes University took first place at the Monarch Invitational Tournament held at King's College on Saturday.
Stough won at 174 while White took 157 and Mendoza was victorious at 125.
Wilkes guaranteed themselves a title at 125 as Mendoza squared off against teammate
Scott Mantua (Clarksville, MD, River Hill) in the finals, winning 12-1. Mendoza reached the title match by defeating RIT's Mike Nguyen 5-2, beating Matt Spano of Gettysburg by tech fall then winning 9-3 over William Boyd of York.
White defeated Dominic Montesanti of RIT 4-2 to win the championship after edging teammate
Brandon Dixon (Factoryville, Lackawanna Trail) 3-2 in the semifinals. The bracket's number one seed also got wins over Roger Williams' Kevin McGilvray 14-2 and Lucas Bragg of York 9-0 earlier in the day.
Stough easily won his title match, defeating Shane Parcel of Roger Williams 9-2 in the finals. Another top seed for the Colonels, Stough took down York's Jeff Goldhagen before beating Gettysburg's Michael Sheehan 6-3 and his teammate Jared Leon 4-2.
In addition to Mantua,
Matt Transue (Stroudsburg, Stroudsburg) also took home second place from his 184 bracket. While
Tyler Lauchaire (Stroudsburg, Stroudsburg) (149),
Shane Everett (Saylorsburg, Pleasant Valley) (157),
Raymond Dungee (Morristown, NJ, Morristown) (174),
Dave Oberrender (Freeland, Hazelton) (197) and
Chris Smith (Wantage, NJ, High Point) (285) all came in third place in their respective brackets, as Wilkes totaled 155 points in the tournament victory.
Roger Williams University finished second at 112 points with York College finishing right behind with 110.5 points. Host King's College came in sixth of nine total participants with 53 total points.
The Colonels hit the mats again next Saturday as they host the John Reese Duals at the Marts Center. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
