SCRANTON – The Wilkes University men's soccer team traveled up to Scranton on Wednesday to take on Marywood in their first action of the season. Within the first 23 minutes the Colonels found themselves behind by three scores, which proved to be too big of a hole, falling 3-2.

The first ten minutes of the game Wilkes held off the Pacers, but over the next 13 minutes Marywood rattled off three goals, two by Gordon William on one-time shots.

Wilkes answered in the 26th minute as Ed Zulkoski (Mountaintop, Crestwood) scored on a penalty kick, giving the Colonels a second breath after the early Pacer start.

In the second half, Wilkes finally added another score at minute 87 when Joe Brennan (Oakdale, CT, Montville) found Michael Turner (Hudson, Coughlin) on a low cross, allowing for an easy goal from Turner and bringing Wilkes to within striking range. Unfortunately, the Colonels couldn't connect on another score, falling 3-2 in the season opener.

Zulkoski and Turner had the two scores on the day, while goalie Kaleb Smith (Beavertown, Midd-West) had five saves in the contest.

Wilkes will have an opportunity to bounce back when they head to Glen Mills, Pa. to take on Neumann College. That game will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4.
