SCRANTON – The Wilkes University volleyball team competed in day two of the Scranton Invitational on Saturday, challenging Scranton and King's on the day. In their first match they fell to the Royals 3-0, but bounced back against King's, 3-2.
Against Scranton, the Lady Colonels couldn't collect a single game, falling by scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-19. Wilkes recorded a .163 percent hitting percentage in the match, but the Royals hit .241 and had just one player with a negative hitting percentage. The Lady Colonels were led by
Marissa Harrison (Shavertown, Lake-Lehman), who had 15 kills as well as 10 digs for a double-double.
Allie Kelleher (Sayre, Athens Area) recorded 18 digs to lead Wilkes, while
Alex Zero (Moscow, North Pocono) passed out 25 assists in the match.
The Lady Colonels had their revenge in there last match of the weekend, defeating King's in five games, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-27, and 16-14 in the final game. King's recorded more kills, less hitting errors, and fewer receiving errors in the match, but the Lady Colonels found a way to snag the victory in the end.
Wilkes was once again led by Harrison who had 21 kills and 16 digs in the contest. Kelleher led the team in digs with 20, while
Erin Nothstein (Mertztown, Brandywine Heights) added 19 of her own. Zero had an outstanding match setting, passing out 40 assists in the contest.
For her efforts, Harrison was named to the All-Tournament team. With the split the Lady Colonels are now 5-5 on the season, with conference matches up ahead.
The Lady Colonels will now play FDU-Florham in their first Freedom Conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 15. That match will be in Madison, N.J. and start at 4:00 p.m.
