LATE PENALTY KICK PROPELS ARCADIA OVER WILKES MEN'S SOCCER, 3-2

EDWARDSVILLE –  Arcadia's Zachary Todd made good on a penalty shot at the 85:11 mark to break a 2-2 tie and give the Knights a 3-2 win over Wilkes University Wednesday night in non-conference men's soccer action from Schmidt Stadium.

Following the loss Wilkes falls to 4-6 overall, while Arcadia improves to 6-5 on the season.

TJ Brandt (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) put Wilkes up early in a high-scoring first half as he vaulted a shot over Arcadia keeper Ryan Lantzy at the 22:00 mark. Arcadia quickly answered to tie the game at 1-1 when Mike Cahill found the back of the net at 23:13.

Ed Zulkoski (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) then played a fine ball through the middle of the field hitting Michael Turner (Hudson, PA/Coughlin) in stride at the top of the box. Turner swiftly scored inside the right post to give the Colonels the lead back at 2-1 midway through the first half.

An Arcadia goal right before the half knotted the game for a second time at 2-2.

The intensity of the game picked up in the second half when an Arcadia forward drove to the net colliding with Colonel keeper Dave Marr (Muncy, PA/Warrior Run). Marr would be injured on the play and forced to leave the game. Patrick Loube (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) entered in relief of Marr, but :19 after he entered, another Arcadia forward rushed Loube causing another collision. The Knights would be given a yellow card, while Loube was sent to the bench after being flagged for a red card. Wilkes would play a man down the rest of the second half.

The game went scoreless until a foul was called on a Wilkes defender in the box leading to Todd' penalty shot. Todd went left corner beating Wilkes' goalie Kyle Romm (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) for the game-winner.

Arcadia held a 24-10 shot advantage, while garnering 12 corner kicks to Wilkes' five attempts. Marr finished with seven saves before leaving with the injury. Romm made three stops in 23:00 in net. Lantzy recorded three saves for Arcadia to post the victory in net.

Wilkes returns to Freedom Conference play Saturday when they host FDU-Florham at Schmidt Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
