ITHACA , NY – Chris Smith (Wantage, NJ/High Point) upset sixth-ranked Matt Mahon at heavyweight but it was just one of two victories for the 13th-ranked Colonels as Wilkes University fell to No. 4 Ithaca College 29-5 in Metropolitan Wrestling Conference action on Friday night.

The Colonels dropped the first four bouts of the night before Kris Krawchuk (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) made a run at top-ranked Derek Brenon at 157. Brenon jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period before Krawchuk knotted it up in the second. After a one-point escape by Brenon, Krawchuk got a two-point takedown at the buzzer to take a 4-3 lead into the third. An escape by Krawchuk with 1:20 left gave him a 5-3 lead before he gave a point to Brenon with an illegal move with 20 seconds to go. Riding time went to Brenon, taking the match to overtime, where a takedown one minute into the second extra period gave him a 7-5 win.

Daniel Brown (Friendsville/Montrose) got the first of the Colonels two wins at 197, taking a 3-1 lead into the third. After letting up Shane Bartrum early in the final period, Brown fought off three attempts at a takedown in the final 10 seconds to take the one-point win.

A takedown by Smith at the end of the second gave him a 4-2 lead over Mahon heading into the final period. Mahon then came back with a takedown of his own with 55 seconds to go to knot the score before Smith escaped, getting the narrow one-point victory.

The Colonels (15-10-1) finish their regular season next Friday when they battle cross-town rival King's as a tune-up before going back to Scandlon Gym for the Metro Conference championships on Sunday, February 27.
