WILKES-BARRE – Matt Transue (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) collected a pin and Wilkes won five of 10 bouts, but an early 12-0 deficit proved to be too much as No. 14 TCNJ defeated the Colonels at home, 24-18. Transue was the only Colonel with a pin on the evening.

The match began on a bad note for Wilkes, as freshman Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) discontinued his bout after the first period due to injury, giving the Lions a quick 6-0 lead. At 133 TCNJ collected six more points on a pin, giving the visitors an early 12-0 advantage.

Ryan Wilson (Manasquan, NJ/Wall Township) was able to break the mold for Wilkes, defeating his opponent and getting the Colonels on the board. His victory was followed by another in Anthony Dattolo (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) who defeated his opponent 3-2. Wilkes dropped the 157 match, but came back with a 6-2 decision by Nathan White (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) at 165. With the match at 15-9, the Colonels found themselves within striking distance, but lost the next two bouts, including one by pin to push the deficit to 24-9.

At 197 Transue took care of his opponent in 35 seconds, while senior Chris Smith (Wantage, NJ/High Point) also collected a win at 285 in his last home match as a Colonel, making the final 24-18 in favor of the Lions.

With the loss Wilkes falls to 15-8-1 on the season.

The Colonels will be back on the mats when they head to Elizabethtown, Pa. to take on the Bluejays on Tuesday, Feb. 8. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
