WILKES MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO ROSEMONT 2-1 IN SEASON OPENER ON LATE GOAL
EDWARDSVILLE – Patrick McElroy broke open a 1-1 tie with 3:09 left in the second half to propel visiting Rosemont College to a 2-1 win over Wilkes University in men's soccer action Thursday night.
With the loss Wilkes falls to 0-1 on the young season, while Rosemont improves to 1-0. The game served as both teams' season opener.
Wilkes struck first taking a 1-0 lead at the 22:54 mark when TJ Brandt (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) found Andrew Asare (Accra, Ghana/SOS HGIC) on the right box where the sophomore beat Rosemont goalie Nick Hulayew inside the left post. Rosemont wasted little time answering back, tying the game at 1-1 just two minutes later after Sergio Martinez found the back of the net off a penalty kick.
From there, the teams went scoreless for the first 42 minutes of the second frame before McElroy beat Colonel keeper Dave Marr (Muncy, PA/Warrior Run) just inside the left post for the game-winner.
The teams shared the same amount of shots (14) and corner kicks (7). Marr finished with six saves, while Hulayew made three stops.
The Colonels will return to action Saturday when they host Gwynedd-Mercy College at 7:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
