WILKES DROPS HEARTBREAKER BY SHOOTOUT TO EASTERN IN FREEDOM SEMIFINAL

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team dropped a tough game by shootout 5-4 to visiting Eastern University Friday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

Wilkes goes to 11-4-4 while Eastern improves to 11-5-3.

Through the opening half, the Lady Colonels battled the Eagles to a scoreless tie. Wilkes outshot Eastern six to five overall and had four shots on goal to Eastern's two.

In the second half, Wilkes had plenty of opportunities but could not manage to put the ball in net. Wilkes had one of its most opportunistic chances with five minutes left to go in the period when a Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ/Madison) shot was deflected and propelled in the air and into the arms of Eastern keeper Alysia Goodman.

In the first overtime, Wilkes had another chance to score when a sharp shot by Fissel went through a pair of defenders legs and was knocked away by the outreached arms of a sprawled out Goodman. Eastern gained some momentum in the second overtime leading in shots with two to zero. Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) finished the game with four saves in net for the Lady Colonels.

Hayley Kay (Danville, PA/Danville) was brought in goal off the bench to face the Eastern attackers during the shootout. Kay stopped an Ashley Graybill shot to give the Lady Colonels momentum. Brooke Edwards (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) followed with a shot that was perfectly placed to the right of Goodman to give Wilkes the 1-0 edge. Then, Amy Thomas found the back of the net for the Eagles to even the shootout at one apiece. Alicia Roberts (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) shot next and was stopped by an impressive layout save by Goodman. Eastern's next three shooters scored, as did Fissel, Erin Donnely, and Ashley Graham (New Hampton, NY/Minisink Valley). Goodman stopped the next Lady Colonel shot attempt and Kelsey Spoelstra ended the game by placing the ball in the upper right post.

Goodman finished with 11 saves for the Eagles.

Eastern will play the winner of FDU-Florham/Misericordia in the Freedom Conference championship. Wilkes will await an ECAC bid that will be played Wednesday
