EIGHT COLONELS CLAIM TOP SIX FINISHES IN 80TH ANNUAL WILKES OPEN; KRAWCHUK CROWNED 149-POUND CHAMPION
 
WILKES-BARRE – Eight Wilkes wrestlers claimed top six finishes highlighted by junior Kris Krawchuk (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) taking home the 149-pound championship at the 80th annual Wilkes Open on Friday at the Marts Center.
 
Krawchuk continued his fine wrestling during the event going 4-0 and pushing his season mark to 14-2 in the process of winning his first Wilkes Open title. Krawchuk started his day pinning Joshua Ruppert of Millersville in 2:44. He followed with a 10-3 decision over Penn's Jordan Michelson and 5-0 win over Pitts-Johnstown's Jack Bachman to reach the finals. Krawchuk earned his first title with a hard-fought 4-2 decision over new Colonel transfer Mark Hartenstine (Easton, PA/Easton).
 
At 125, Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) went 4-2 to claim fourth place. Rea used two major decision wins (11-2) and a 1-0 decision in the consolation bracket.
 
Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) was the fourth top-six finisher at 133 posting a 5-2 win over Sean McCabe of Rutgers in the fifth place bout. Mason McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Easton) was the lone Colonel to place at 165 earning third place after starting the year 3-0. After receiving a medical forfeit, McIntyre posted a 12-5 win over Keith Ryan of Pitts-Johnstown in the third place bout.
 
At 197, Matt Transue (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) had a strong showing finishing second after falling to Virginia Tech's Bobby LaVelle in the final 7-2. Transue posted three straight wins to reach the finals all by decision including two 11-4 decisions and a 4-0 victory over Nikos Garofola of Pitts-Johnstown in the semifinals.
 
Eric Bach (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) (184) and Mike Shannon (Montvale, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) (285) rounded out the Colonel place winners each finishing in sixth at their respective weight class.
 
Wilkes returns to the mat next Saturday, January 5th when the Colonels compete in the North/South Duals in Collegeville, Pa. at 9:30 a.m.
