STONER LIFTS MEN'S SOCCER PAST DESALES 2-1 WITH LATE GOAL

CENTER VALLEY, PA – Freshman John Stoner (Etters, PA/Red Land) scored his fourth goal of the season in the 87th minute to lead the Colonels past DeSales University 2-1 in an important Freedom Conference matchup. The win sends the Colonels to 9-6 (2-2 Freedom Conference) while DeSales slips to 7-9 (1-3 Freedom Conference). Wilkes held a slight advantage in shots (14-12) and corners (5-4).

The Colonels got on the board first in the 16th minute when Tyler Young (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) headed home a header from Jim Moran (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) off a long throw from Geoffrey Arentz (Stevens, PA/Lancaster Catholic ).

John Kilduff scored his first goal of the season for the Bulldogs to knot the scoring at one in the 27th minute. Brett Morris picked up the assist on the DeSales goal.

In the second half Wilkes came out of the break with a ton of momentum and created several good scoring chances but were unable to capitalize on any of them. Momentum would switch over to the DeSales side that saw them have some good opportunities but fortunately for the Colonels they were unable to add a second goal.

After a late fury and a great initial save by the DeSales goalkeeper Ryan O'Neill, Stoner was able to pound home a left footed half volley to the upper part of the net giving the Colonels the outright lead. Wilkes survived a last ditch effort by DeSales and held on for an all-important three points in the Freedom Conference playoff race.

The Colonels return to action on Tuesday in their final home match of the year when they host fellow rival King's College in a Freedom Conference matchup. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
