CORTLAND USES EARLY GOAL ON WAY TO 1-0 WIN OVER WILKES WOMEN'S SOCCER

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Host Courtland State scored early in the first half and made its stand over the 90 minutes of play to post a 1-0 win over Wilkes University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action.

Wilkes slips to 9-6-3 overall following the defeat while Cortland improves to 8-4-5 on the year after the win.

The game-winner came at the 17:35 mark of the first half when Rachel Parker booted home a cross from Jessica McFadden from 15-yards out beating Wilkes keeper Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic).

Wilkes' best chance to tie came late in the second half when a header from Samantha Hockley (Middletown, PA/Lower Dauphin) hit the cross bar at the 85:27 mark.

Both teams finished with 11 shots each, while Wilkes garnered eight corner kicks to Cortland's one attempt. Mahoney registered four saves in net for the Lady Colonels. Cortland goalie Rachel Axt finished with three saves to record the shutout.

Wilkes wraps up its regular season with a Freedom Conference matchup at top-seeded and undefeated in conference play (6-0) Misericordia University Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
