Myzar Mendoza claimed his second consecutive title at 133-pounds at the Monarch Invitational WILKES WRESTLING CLAIMS THIRD AT MONARCH INVITATIONAL AS COLONELS CROWN TWO CHAMPIONS, SIX TOP FOUR FINISHERS 11/2/2013 8:38:00 PM (Full Results) WILKES WRESTLING CLAIMS THIRD AT MONARCH INVITATIONAL AS COLONELS CROWN TWO CHAMPIONS, SIX TOP FOUR FINISHERS WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University wrestling team captured two individual titles and six top four finishes on way to third place at the King's College Monarch Invitational Saturday night at the Scandlon Gymnasium. The Colonels posted 85.5 team points for third place trailing second place Roger Williams by just two points (87,5). Cortland State notched the overall team title with 105.5 points. At 133-pounds, Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) defended his crown scoring a 5-3 win over Sean Kempf of Cortland in the finals. Mendoza reached the finals using a fall, 9-0 decision, and technical fall in the semifinals (15-0) on way to his second consecutive title. The top two seeds met for the title at 149-pounds as Mark Hartenstine (Easton, PA/Easton) notched his first-ever Monarch Invitational championship with an 8-6 decision over second seeded Brad Mayville of RIT. Hartenstine entered the finals after a 7-2 decision in the second round and consecutive pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals (both under three minutes). In his first action as a Colonel at 174-pounds, third seeded Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) wrestled his way to the finals with three straight decision wins. He faced top seeded Lou Puca of Cortland in the championship bout falling in a tough match 2-0 to settle for second place. The defending champion at 125-pounds, Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) settled for third place in 2013 posting a 17-2 technical fall over Paul Fields of Cortland in the third place bout. Rea dropped a 4-1 decision in the semifinals to eventual champion Jacob Spearman of Washington and Jefferson. Tyler Lauchaire (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) (157) and Levi Veppert (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) (184) were the two other top four place finishers for Wilkes at the event. Lauchaire fell in the semifinals after posting an 8-3 win over Brian Watkins of Lycoming in the quarters. Veppert rode two decision wins in the first round and quarterfinals before falling 9-4 in the semifinals to eventual runner-up Brian Bulger of Cortland. Wilkes next hosts the annual John Reese Duals (Oneonta, Centenary, Messiah and John Hopkins) Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Marts Center.
