NO. 7 WILKES WRESTLING TIES SCHOOL RECORD WITH 18TH STRAIGHT WIN WITH 19-12 VICTORY OVER NO. 13 ITHACA
 
ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 7 Wilkes University wrestling team recorded its 18th straight victory tying the school-record for consecutive wins in a season posting a 19-12 victory over No. 13 Ithaca College Friday night at Glazer Arena.
 
Wilkes moves to 18-3 overall while Ithaca drops to 7-5 on the year. The win ties the school record set back in 1979-80 when the Colonels won 18 straight finishing 19-2 on the year with its only two losses coming against Lehigh and Oregon State.
 
Ithaca grabbed a 9-0 lead after three bouts using three decision wins. No. 3 Ricky Gomez scored a
6-1 decision over Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) at 125 to begin the match. At 133, two ranked wrestlers squared off as Wilkes' Myzar Mendoza (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill), ranked No. 5 in the nation, fell 9-3 to No. 4 Alex Gomez. Dominick Giacolone then claimed a tough 4-0 decision over Jeff Peterson (Edison, NJ/Edison) at 141-pounds.
 
The Colonels began their comeback at 149 as No. 2 Mark Hartenstine (Easton, PA/Easton) moved to 17-1 on the year with earning a 5-0 win over Kevin Collins. At 157, No. 3 Kris Krawchuk (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) (22-2) then posted a 9-8 win over No. 6 Derek Brenon to cut the Ithaca lead to 9-6 after five bouts.
 
At 165-pounds, Nathan White (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) took a major decision win (8-0) over Jake Buczewski to give Wilkes a 10-9 lead. After an Ithaca decision at 174, Eric Bach (Newton, NJ/Kittatiny) earned a 7-4 decision over Daniel Glinko at 184 as Wilkes led 13-12 with two bouts remaining. Matthew Transue scored a 3-1 win over Shane Bartrum in overtime extending the lead to 16-12 before William Fletcher (Ottsville, PA/Palisades) clinched the match with a 4-0 win over Chris Ramirez at 285.
 
Wilkes returns to the mat next Friday when the Colonels conclude their dual match slate against cross-town rival King's College at 7:00 p.m. at Scandlon Gymnasium.
