LADY COLONELS WOMEN'S SOCCER WINS SEASON OPENER 2-1

EDWARDSVILLE - The Wilkes women's soccer team opened up their 2013 campaign with a 2-1 victory over visiting Moravian College in the opening round of the Colonel Classic played at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

The Lady Colonels opened up the scoring in the 35th minute when Sarah Wasley (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) ripped a shot from the 18-yard box over the keeper's outstretched hands. The remainder of the first half was scoreless as the Lady Colonels entered halftime.

Wilkes came out of the gates fast in the second half and added a goal in the 52nd minute when Katie Cocchi (Morris Plains, NJ/Parsipany Hills) played a beautiful through ball to the left side to an oncoming Dianna Connor (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley), who placed a wonderful left footed shot into the right side panel of the goal. It was Connor's first collegiate goal as a freshman.

Moravian turned up the pressure after the 2nd Wilkes goal and netted a goal of their own in the 65th minute when Kirsten Schall scored her first goal of the season. Despite the warm and humid playing conditions the Lady Colonels defense was able to prevent Moravian from tying up the game and Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) made three saves for her first win in 2013.

In the second match of the Colonel Classic Brockport State defeated Muhlenberg College 3-0.

The Lady Colonels return to action tomorrow (Saturday) with the conclusion of the Colonel Classic as they take on Muhlenberg College starting at 5:00 p.m. Brockport State will face Moravian at 2:30 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
