Nick Dawson and Ryan Smith earned top four finishes at the Next Man In Nationals SMITH, DAWSON EARN TOP FOUR FINISHES IN NEXT MAN IN NATIONALS 1/10/2014 8:00:00 PM (Full Results) SMITH, DAWSON EARN TOP FOUR FINISHES IN NEXT MAN IN NATIONALS DES MOINES, IOWA – Nicholas Dawson (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville) (285) and Ryan Smith (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) (141) placed in second and fourth in their respective weight classes to lead the No. 5 Wilkes University wrestling team in the Next Man In Nationals hosted by Simpson College at Hy Vee Hall on Friday afternoon. No team scores were kept at the 12-team tournament, which featured wrestlers from Baker (Kan.), Colorado State University, Great Falls (Mont.), Luther, Maryville, Morningside, New York University, Springfield, Upper Iowa, Simpson and Wisconsin-Whitewater. Dawson and Smith were the two lone entries for Wilkes at the event, serving as a warm-up to the NWCA National Duals which will be held tomorrow and Sunday. Dawson began the tournament with a 2-1 decision over Tom Tourdot of Luther in the first round. After a pin in :17 in the quarterfinals, Dawson recorded a 4-2 decision over Springfield's David Varian to reach the championship bout. There he fell to Andrew Waites of Luther 7-1 to settle for second. Smith received a bye in round one before cruising to a 16-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals over NYU's Nick Matthews. He would fall in the semifinals 9-2 against UW Whitewater's Ronny Hauser before wrestling back earning a fall in 4:03 to reach the third place bout. There Smith was unable to continue wrestling leaving the tournament with a medical forfeit for fourth place. Print Friendly Version
