Wilkes Basketball Drops 90-78 Decision Against Gwynedd Mercy to Conclude Monarch Classic
 
WILKES-BARRE – Justin Knight and Arron Goodman combined for 48 points and 14 rebounds to power Gwynedd Mercy University to a 90-78 victory over Wilkes University Saturday afternoon in the third game of the Monarch Classic at Scandlon Gymnasium.
 
Wilkes falls to 6-3 overall following the loss while Gwynedd Mercy improves to 7-3 on the season after the non-league win.
 
Gwynedd Mercy opened a 38-29 lead with 5:49 left in the first half only to see the Colonels answer back to cut the deficit to two, 43-41 at the break thanks to 13 first half point from Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) and eight more tallies off the bench from Jeremy Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional). Wizar picked up where he left off yesterday after canning eight three-pointers in the loss against Susquehanna, the junior sharpshooter nailed three more treys in the first frame of game two. Hartman capped a 9-2 run to end the half with a layup at the buzzer.
 
Wikes came to within three early in the second half, but scores from Knight and Goodman pushed the Gwynedd Mercy advantage to 66-52 with 11:31 left in the game. The Griffins rode the hot shooting of Goodman and Knight throughout the rest of the half as Gwynedd Mercy shot 64.0 percent (16-25) from the floor over the final twenty minutes of play.
 
Wizar led six Colonels in doubles figures notching 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting after torching the nets for a career-high 32 points in the contest against Susquehanna. John Goffredo (Bangor, PA/Pius X) followed with a career-high 13 points, while Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) added 11 points and three rebounds. Hartman and Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) each scored ten points.
 
Wilkes leading scorer Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) was held to a season-low four points on 2-for-7 shooting after entering the game averaging 19.7 points per-game.
 
Knight and Goodman scored 24 points apiece to lead the Gwynedd Mercy attack as the Griffins finished shooting 56.4 percent from the field including eight three-pointers.
 
Wilkes remains idle on Christmas break until Tuesday, December 30th when the Colonels host Gettysburg College at 3:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
