SURDY, BROWNSEY POWER WILKES FIELD HOCKEY PAST MANHATTANVILLE 5-3

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) and Maura Brownsey (Glenside, PA/Saint Basil Academy) combined for five goals to power the visiting Wilkes University field hockey team past Manhattanville College 5-3 Saturday afternoon in both teams Freedom Conference opener.

Wilkes, winners of two straight, improves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in Freedom games, while Manhattanville drops to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Brownsey put Wilkes up early just 9:53 into the game when she scored off a pass in front of the mouth of the goal from Kaylee Caprari (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Valley West). Seven minutes later the Wilkes lead grew to 2-0 when Surdy scored the first of her three tallies off a penalty corner taken by Maura Anistranski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West).

After a Manhattanville goal cut the lead in half, Surdy added her second strike, this time off a deflection of the initial shot of Caprari just before the half as the Lady Colonels led 3-1 at the break.

Surdy completed her hat trick early in the second half off a penalty corner and Brownsey found the back of the net in a scrum in front of the net late to seal the road conference victory for Wilkes.

Lauren Burrows (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) recorded the win in net for Wilkes making six saves, while Meghan Hughes picked up the loss for the Valiants finishing with five stops.

Wilkes returns to non-conference play Tuesday hosting the University of Scranton at 4:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
