OLIVERIO REBOUND GOAL PROPELS WOMEN'S SOCCER IN OVERTIME

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – Freshman Micaela Oliverio (Carlisle, PA/Trinity) was in the right spot at the right time as she smashed home a rebound in the 5th minute of overtime, propelling the Lady Colonels to a 1-0 win against Stevenson.

With the win Wilkes improves to 6-4 on the season while Stevenson falls to 2-5-3.

In the first half Stevenson had controlled much of the play including outshooting the Lady Colonels 8-1.  Lisa Semetti (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) was up to the task in net for Wilkes as she made four stops and stymied the Mustangs attack on many opportunities.

The second half started off much like the first period with the Mustangs threatening on numerous chances.  Semetti remained steady in net and the Lady Colonels defense held the Mustangs off the scoring sheet.  Stevenson nearly got on the board in the 61st minute when Allie Ondrejcak hit the crossbar off of a cross and Lauren Spivey's rebound effort into an open net went wide.  Through 90 minutes the Lady Colonels were outshot 17-1 and out cornered 6-0.

Despite not having the statistical categories in their favor the Lady Colonels stole the momentum away from Stevenson toward the end of the second half and carried that momentum into overtime.  In the 5th minute of overtime Caroline Connor (Penfield, NY/Penfield) took a ball down the right side ripping a shot on net that was blocked by the mustangs goalkeeper Katelynn Giannacini.  Giannacini was unable to corral the rebound and a streaking Oliverio was in on net smashing the rebound into the back of the net, sending the Lady Colonels home winners.

Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. when they host the University of Scranton at Schmidt Stadium.
