ALVERNIA SCORES TWO FIRST HALF GOALS IN SHUTOUT OF WILKES MEN'S SOCCER

READING, PA – Alvernia scored two goals within the first 24 minutes of the game as they went on to win 2-0 against the Colonels in a non-conference matchup.

Wilkes drops to 1-4 on the season while Alvernia improves to 3-1.

In the 9th minute Colonels Eric McAnena (Horsham, PA/Abington) whipped a cross in from the right side that found a wide-open Mitchell Woodward (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) around the six-yard box for a volley.  Woodward's volley however found the hands of Alvernia goalkeeper Zach Rider keeping the Colonels off the scoreboard and scoring first.  Three minutes later Alex Martyn picked up a loose ball off of a free kick and blasted the shot past a diving Patrick Loube (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.  The Crusaders added a second goal in the 24th minute when Rocky Elgogari was found unmarked on the back post for a sliding finish off of a Martyn feed.

In the second half Wilkes generated some good scoring opportunities but never were able to find the back of the net as Alvernia held on for the 2-0 victory.

Wilkes was outshot 11-6 on the afternoon and out cornered 5-3.

The Navy and Gold return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Baptist Bible College in a non-conference affair.  Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
