Colonels Battle Tough with Misericordia, Fall 66-59 on the Road

DALLAS, PA – Wilkes battled throughout the entire game, but faltered late as Misericordia defeated the Colonels 66-59 on Wednesday evening.

The Colonels fall to .500 overall with a record of 7-7 (2-1 Freedom) while Misericordia improves to 10-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Freedom Conference.

Midway through the first half neither team was able to mount more than a three point lead as both teams exchanged baskets throughout the ten minutes.  Wilkes trailed 14-13 with 10:26 to go in the half thanks to a Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) jumper.  Jackson made good on his second three-pointer of the night to give Wilkes a 16-14 lead with over nine minutes to go in the first 20 minutes. Jackson's eight points accounted for half of the Colonels production to start the game.

Despite not scoring a basket for nearly four minutes the Cougars tied the game at 16 and went ahead 18-16 after Joe Busacca scored a layup at the 6:46 mark.  Jackson scored his 11th point of the half on another three-pointer to re-gain the lead for the Colonels at 19-18.  Erik Kerns layup capped a quick 6-0 run for the Cougars to send them back out in front 24-19 with just over three minutes left in the first half.  Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) and Mason Gross (Hughestown, PA/Pittston) made three-pointers in the final two minutes of the half and Steve Stravinksi sank two foul shots to trim the Cougars lead to 28-27 at the break.

Wilkes and Misericordia remained neck and neck to start the second half as the teams exchanged points throughout the first ten minutes.  Misericordia opened up a five-point lead before Jackson connected on his fourth triple of the game to cut the lead to three at 47-45 with 9:09 remaining in the game.

The two-point lead was the closest the Colonels would get for the remainder of the game as the Cougars used a 10-3 run to extend their lead to nine (57-48) with 2:48 remaining on the game clock.  Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood), Wizar and Stravinski all connected on three's, making it a two- possession game with a minute to go.  Misericordia's Busacca was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line sealing the victory for the Cougars.

Wilkes shot 34.4 percent (22-64) from the field and 42.9 percent (12-28) from three-point territory.  Jackson scored a season-high 18 points for the Navy and Gold making good on four three-pointers and three two-point shots.  Hinkel had an impressive game scoring 12 points, grabbing 8 boards and collecting five steals on the defensive end of the court.  Stravinski finished in double-figures with 10 points while collecting nine caroms.

Misericordia shot 43.8 percent (21-48) for the game and made 73.3 percent (22-30) of their foul shot attempts.  Steve Ware posted a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Busacca was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line and scored 15 points.  James Hawk chipped in with 12 points and pulled down five boards.  Misericordia dominated the paint outscoring Wilkes 32-12 for the game.
