Brunners’s Big Day Not Enough as Wilkes Falls 75-73 to Scranton

Brunners's Big Day Not Enough as Wilkes Falls 75-73 to Scranton

WILKES-BARRE – Despite a near perfect performance from rookie forward Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and his career-high 23 points (10-for-11), Wilkes University was unable to make the complete comeback falling 75-73 to the University of Scranton Saturday afternoon to conclude play at the 2015 Cross County Challenge.

Wilkes slips to 6-6 overall and finishes the tournament 0-2 after the defeat. Scranton, which defeated King's in overtime last night, improves to 9-2 overall and has yet to lose in the county-wide round robin tourney since its inception four years ago.

Scranton held a five-point lead at the break, 33-28, thanks to an 8-for-10 team performance from the foul line in the first half. Brunner jumpstarted the Colonels in the first stanza hitting all but one of his field goal attempts finishing the half with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

Wilkes began its comeback midway through the second half using a Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) three-pointer to cap a 6-0 run to cut the Royals advantage to two, 49-47, with just over ten minutes remaining.

Scranton pushed its lead back to six over the next four minutes of play before a bucket from Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) and three-point play from Jeremy Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) brought the Colonels back to within two at 62-60 with 5:41 left on the clock.

A clutch trey from Scranton's Justin Klingman and two free throws from Brendan Boken kept the Royals ahead down the stretch. Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood)'s layup with :15 remaining cut the Scranton lead to two once again, but a layup from Boken with :12 on the clock on the Royals final possession iced the game and the victory for Scranton.

Brunner finished 10-for-11 from the field on way to his career-best 23-point afternoon. Stravinski followed with 18 points including four three-pointers, while Wizar added 12 points and Hartman a season-high 11 points respectively for Wilkes.

Boken led three Scranton players in double figures with 21 points and four rebounds. Klingman and Marcus Thomas each added 15 points combining for six treys on seven attempts from behind the arc for the Royals perimeter.

Wilkes (6-6) returns home Thursday hosting Penn State Wilkes-Barre at 7:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
