The big road win improves the Colonels overall record to 10-9 and completes a season sweep over the Valiants who are 6-13, 2-6 Freedom. Wilkes has a two game advantage over King's and Eastern in the Freedom Conference race for the 4th and final playoff spot thanks to the victory. Wilkes made half of their first ten shots in opening up a 15-11 lead eight minutes into the game. Manhattanville took the lead back at 20-18 with a 9-3 run over a four-minute span as the Colonels turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions. Over the remaining eight minutes of the half both teams were neck and neck exchanging baskets and lead changes throughout. There were ten lead changes over the final eight minutes with neither team being able to break the game open by more than three points. Anthony Maestre converted an old fashioned three-point play to put Manhattanville up 39-38 at the break. Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) started the second half for Wilkes drilling a three to tie the game at 41-41. Over the next five minutes Manhattanville went on a 12-4 run to give themselves a 53-45 advantage, their largest of the game. Wilkes cut the lead to one before Manhattanville utilized a 7-0 run to regain a comfortable eight-point lead at 60-52 with 9:48 to play. Wilkes responded once again to the run and manufactured an 11-2 run over a three-minute span to lead 63-62. Freshman Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) scored five of the eleven points and put Wilkes up one thanks to an old fashioned three-point play off of a fast break. Trailing by one with a minute to go Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood) scored a layup in the paint with :43 seconds remaining to put Wilkes up 70-69. Manhattanivlle got the ball back with a chance to take the lead and turned it over on the next possession. On the ensuing inbounds play Wizar was fouled and went to the line where he made 1-out-of-two from the line extending the lead to 71-69. The Valiants got the ball back with :15 seconds but were unable to tie the game as Maestre's jumper missed. Hinkel corralled the huge defensive board, was fouled on the play and sealed the game for the Colonels draining both his foul shot attempts. Wilkes finished the game shooting an impressive 51.9 percent (27-52) from the floor and 35 percent (7-20) from three-point range. The Colonels were good on 16-of-20 foul shots (75 percent). Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) played 39 minutes scoring 18 points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists. Wizar finished with 15 points and five boards while Brunner capped his day with 10 points and three boards. Jeremy Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) provided an important spark off the bench scoring eight points and grabbing eight caroms. Manhattanville shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field and 27.8 percent (5-18) from distance. The Valiants struggled mightily from the line and in what was a tight affair; probably cost them the win by shooting only 43.5 percent (10-23). Andrew Winter led the Valiants with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Maestre scored 11 points and corralled five rebounds. Juan Camacho nearly pulled off a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the loss. Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when they will face-off against Freedom foe Eastern University. The game will have major playoff implications as Wilkes holds a two-game lead over the Eagles in the race for the 4th and final playoff spot. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.Print Friendly Version
