Women's Soccer Clinches Playoff Bid with Double-OT Win at Manhattanville
PURCHASE, N.Y.-
Micaela Oliverio (Carlisle, PA/Trinity) scored in the 103
rd minute to give the Wilkes University women's soccer team a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Manhattanville College and to secure a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) tournament.
The Lady Colonels improved to 6-10-2 overall and 3-3-1 in MAC Freedom play while the Valiants fell to 5-10-1 and 1-5-1.
Wilkes struck first in the 11
th minute when
Lauren Esser (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) launched a free kick off of the Manhattanville goalkeeper, allowing
Emily Wirth (Vestal, NY/Vestal) to put the rebound into an empty net for her second goal of the season.
Manhattanville tied the game at 1-1 in the 81
st minute.
The game remained tied throughout the rest of regulation and the first overtime, but came to a halt and a celebration when
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) played a through ball that hit off the goalkeeper with Oliverio corralling the rebound and knocking home the game-winner for the Lady Colonels.
Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) made six saves in net for the Lady Colonels.
Wilkes held a 20-8 advantage in shots with a 15-7 advantage on shots on goal. It also held a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The Lady Colonels, who earned the fourth seed in next week's MAC Freedom Tournament, will return to action on Wednesday traveling to top seed Misericordia University for a semifinal matchup starting at 7:00 p.m.
