WILKES-BARRE – The No. 22 Wilkes University wrestling team used a decision on the final bout of the match to edge out visiting Elizabethtown College 21-17 Friday night in the Marts Center.
 
Wilkes improves to 2-2 overall on the year, and collects its fifth straight victory against the Blue Jays dating back to 2011-12.
 
Michael Fleck (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) began the match for Wilkes earning an 11-4 decision at 125. Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) remained perfect on the season pinning his opponent in just :24 to give the Colonels a 9-0 lead after two bouts.
 
Elizabethtown claimed decision wins at 141 and 149 (in overtime) to cut the Wilkes lead to 9-6 heading into the 157-pound bout. A technical fall moved the Blue Jays ahead up 11-9 before a decision win at 165 gave them a 14-9 advantage.
 
James Ilvento (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) posted a fall at 165 to put Wilkes back on top up 15-14 before a Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) 6-0 decision pushed the Colonels lead to 18-14. After an Elizabethtown decision at 197 put the Blue Jays down just one at 18-17, Alex Pullen (Salisbury, MD/Wicomico) earned a 9-5 win at 285 to seal the victory for Wilkes.
 
Wilkes returns to the mat Sunday traveling to Muhlenberg, Pa. for a tri-match with Temple and Muhlenberg starting at 11:00 p.m..
