Cold Shooting in Second Half Dooms Wilkes Women's Basketball at Scranton 76-55
SCRANTON, PA – Trailing by just four at halftime, visiting Wilkes University went cold from the floor over the final twenty minutes falling 76-55 at the University of Scranton Saturday afternoon at the Long Center.
Wilkes slips to 0-3 on the year still looking for its first win, while Scranton improves to 3-0 remaining unbeaten on the young season.
Wilkes trailed throughout the first half as Scranton built a seven-point lead midway through the second quarter. The Lady Colonels responded with a three-pointer from
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) and a
Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) layup to cut the deficit to one at 27-26 with four minutes left until the break. Scranton pushed the lead back to seven late in the quarter before a
Jamie Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) trey put Wilkes down by just three 40-37 at the break.
Wilkes went cold from the floor in the second half shooting just 27.9 percent making only eight field goals over the third and fourth quarters of play. Scranton outscored Wilkes by three in the third and extended its advantage in the final quarter outscoring the Lady Colonels 23-9 over the final frame to seal the non-league victory.
Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led all Wilkes scorers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Smelas followed with ten points and six rebounds.
Alexix Roman led four Scranton players in double figures with 22 points to pace the Lady Royals.
Wilkes travels to Drew University Tuesday for a non-league contest scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Madison, NJ.
