Wilkes Football Edged by Misericordia 31-24

Wilkes Football Edged by Misericordia 31-24

DALLAS, PA – Misericordia's quarterback Jeff Puckett accounted for three of the Cougars four touchdowns to lead the hosts to a 31-24 victory over visiting Wilkes University in a Middle Atlantic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

The defeat drops the Colonels to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in MAC games while Misericordia posts its first win of the 2015 season standing 1-8 overall and 1-7 in league games.

Misericordia wasted little time on its first possession going 67 yards on eight plays capped by a one yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead just four minutes into the game. The Cougars added to the lead on their next possession when Puckett found his tight end on a throw in the back of the end zone from two yards away taking a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Misericordia looked poised to push the lead to three scores before the Colonels defense tightened and forced a punt to setup the offense deep in its own end. From there, Ryan Dailey (Easton, PA/Wilson) found William Deemer (Washington Township, NJ/Warren Hills) for a 38-yard strike over the middle of the field to move Wilkes into Cougar territory for the first time in the game. After two rushes from Devon Fink (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) moved the ball to the Misericordia 10, Dailey found Deemer again on the left sideline and the junior receiver made one Cougar miss on his way to the end zone. A Carl Von Glahn (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) extra point cut the advantage in half with Wilkes trailing 14-7 with 5:53 left in the half.

Misericordia added one more score late on a drive that finished on a one-yard touchdown run from Puckett with two seconds left to give the Cougars a 21-7 lead at the break.

The teams traded possessions to start the third quarter, before a Wilkes drive started at its own two yard line following a Misericordia punt. On second and short, Dailey hit Deemer for another big completion as Deemer found room down the right sideline on a short pass converting the play into a 64-yard scamper down to the Misericordia 18. A 14-yard completion from Dailey to Kyle Gattuso (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) brought the Colonels inside the five before Devon Fink (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) found the end zone from four yards out to complete the 98-yard drive. The extra point brought Wilkes to within seven at 21-14 with 7:59 left in the third stanza.

Misericordia responded on its next possession using a 10 play, 52-yard drive to push the advantage back to two touchdowns leading 28-14 with 3:01 left in the third quarter. Puckett rushed for his second touchdown of the game from five yards out for the Cougar score.

Dailey continued his second half surge through the air finding Zach Bogoly (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) for a 47-yard pitch-and-catch to move Wilkes down to the Misericordia 22 on the ensuing Colonels possession. Four plays later, Dailey found his tight end Garret Armstrong in the middle of the end zone wide open for the Wilkes touchdown. Following the extra point, Wilkes still trailed 28-21 with 14:37 left in the fourth quarter.

The Wilkes defense came up with a big play on Misericordia's next drive when Puckett was stripped of the ball at midfield recovered by the Colonels Michael Legg (Whitehaven, PA/Crestwood) setting up the offense for the game-tying drive. The drive was short-lived though as Wilkes gave the ball right back when Bogoly lost the ball after a catch down the left sideline which was recovered by a Misericordia defensive back.

Misericordia took advantage of the Wilkes turnover moving the ball deep into the Colonels territory before the drive stalled. The Cougars settled for a 22-yard field goal to move their lead to 31-21 with 6:20 remaining.

Wilkes began its next drive at its own 18 and faced a third and sixteen with under five minutes on the clock. The duo of Dailey to Deemer came through again on the third down play for 30 yards to move the ball to the Misericordia 45. After three straight incompletions, Dailey's pass on fourth and long was intercepted by a Cougar defensive back ending the drive.

Wilkes forced a punt on Misericordia's next possession setting up the offense needing a score or field goal to keep hopes alive. Wilkes moved the ball down to the Misericordia 9 before three incomplete passes forced the Colonels to try a 26-yard field goal to cut the lead to seven with :46 remaining. Von Glahn's kick was good from 26 yards bringing Wilkes to within one score at 31-24 and an onside kicking attempt coming on the ensuing kickoff. The onside kick fell short hitting a Wilkes player prior to going ten yards ending the hopes of the Wilkes comeback.

Dailey finished 26-of-44 for a career-high 366 passing and two touchdowns. Deemer also enjoyed a career day hauling in six passes for 170 yards and a score. Fink led the Wilkes ground game with one score on nine rushed for 31 yards.

Tanner Stengel (Allentown, PA/Parkland) led the Wilkes defense recording a career-high 20 tackles on the day, which put the junior over the 100+ tackle mark for the season. It also marked the second consecutive year Stengel reached the milestone. Isaiah Robinson (Pittsburgh, PA/Milton Hershey) added 15 stops while Jordan Stiles (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) contributed 12 tackles.

Wilkes concludes its season next Saturday traveling to cross-town rival King's College for the annual Mayor's Cup game at 12:00 p.m. The game will also be televised locally by Fox 56 with a noon kickoff.
