Colonel Cagers Upended at DeSales 65-63

Colonel Cagers Upended at DeSales 65-63

CENTER VALLEY, PA – Down two with four seconds left and the ball, Wilkes University decided to go for the win as Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) missed a potential game-winning three-point attempt at the buzzer allowing host DeSales University to escape with a 65-63 victory Wednesday night at Billera Hall.

Wilkes falls to 10-12 overall and 5-6 in league games following the defeat and stand one game out of a potential fourth and final postseason spot with three games left to play. King's posted a win over Eastern giving the Monarchs sole possession on fourth place at 6-5.

A game that saw just one tie and five lead changes throughout proved to become quite the thriller late in the second half thanks to some timely shooting from the Colonels. After DeSales took a 65-58 lead with 2:51 remaining, Wilkes began its furious comeback setting up the final sequence of the contest. Cameron Hinkel (Millerstown, PA/Greenwood) began the rally with a jumper followed by a Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) layup just thirty second later. Stravinski was fouled on the play and completed the old-fashioned three-point play at the line cutting the DeSales advantage to 65-63 setting up the final few possessions.

After a DeSales missed three-pointer on the ensuing possession, Wilkes grabbed the rebound and headed for the tie with :40 left. Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) missed a potential game-tying jumper and the Bulldogs corralled the rebound with :26 left. DeSales opened the game up for Wilkes yet again as a missed Bulldog layup gave the Colonel one last chance at a tie or win with :4 on the clock.

From there, Wilkes went for the win and Wizar's trey was off the mark as the hosts held on for the tough two-point conference win.

DeSales led by as many as 12 throughout the first half only to see Wilkes climb back into the game with solid stops on defense and productive possessions on offense. Back-to-back jumper from Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) followed by a three-pointer from Jeremy Hartman (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) brought Wilkes to within one, 34-33, with just under two minutes left in the half.

Five Colonels reached double figures in a balanced attack. Brunner led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds followed by 12 from Stravinski. Wizar, Hinkel and Hartman each added ten points each.

Cody Deal topped DeSales with a game-high 19 points and four rebounds.

Wilkes hosts Delaware Valley Saturday on Senior Day at 3:00 p.m. in the Marts Center.
