Colonels Fall Short of Final Postseason Spot With 83-76 Loss at King's in Season Finale
 
WILKES-BARRE – Host King's College opened up a seven point lead at the half and hung on despite a furious Wilkes rally in the second half to escape with an 83-76 victory in a win-and-move-on game on Saturday afternoon at the Scandlon Gymnasium.
 
Wilkes sees its season end with a 12-13 overall record standing 7-7 in league play under first-year head coach Izzi Metz. King's advances to the postseason tournament next week as the fourth seed finishing the regular season 15-10 overall and 8-6 in conference games.
 
King's held a six point lead 63-57 with 8:44 remaining before Wilkes began its slow comeback. A three-pointer from Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) and layup from Tyler Jackson (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) cut the lead to two 65-63 just three minutes later. Another deep trey, this time from Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) brought Wilkes to within one, 72-71, with 3:14 left.
 
From there, King's answered with two straight buckets to up its advantage to six, 79-73, with :38 remaining. Jackson scored in the paint to cut it to four, but four straight King's free throws sealed the home win and a playoff spot for the Monarchs.
 
King's opened with a 10-3 lead as John and Chris Fazzini notched seven of the Monarchs first ten tallies in the run. Back-to-back threes from Wizar and Stravinski brought the Colonels back to within one, 10-9 with 14:43 on the first half clock. Another 8-2 spurt forced a Wilkes timeout as King's led 18-11 with 13:18 left in the half.
 
The King's lead grew to as many as 14 points before three straight buckets capped by a driving Jackson layup put Wilkes down 30-22 with 7:17 remaining in the half.
 
King's kept its eight point lead through the final five minutes of the first stanza before a quick 5-0 Wilkes spurt capped by a long trey from Wizar cut the Monarch lead to three, 40-37, with 1:51 left. King's hit its final two shots to end the half up 44-37.
 
Wizar led Wilkes with 19 points and five assists including five three-pointers. Brunner added 16 points and four rebounds, while Jackson and Hinkel each added 13 tallies in the defeat.
 
Dan Borner led King's with 23 big points off the bench for the Monarchs. Dan Rutecki followed with 22 points while J. Fazzini chipped in 21 tallies on five three-pointers.
