Wilkes finishes its 2014-15 season with an 10-14 overall record standing 4-10 in Freedom games. The four wins marks the most in conference play under fourth-year head coach Chris Heery. King's concludes its season at 11-14, 7-7 in league games narrowly missing the postseason tournament next week. After a back-and-forth first half saw Wilkes take a slim five points advantage at the break (27-22), the second half brought much more drama and some more offensive firepower from both squads. King's took a five points lead 43-38 with 13:16 on the second half clock when Kayla Feairheller knocked home a three-pointer from the left wing. Wilkes responded with a bucket from Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and tied the game with a trey from Kate Thomas (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) just three minutes later. The host Lady Monarchs again opened a lead this time at 53-44 with just over five minutes left in the game. Another jumper form Smelas and four free throws, two each from Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) and Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) cut the deficit to four at 59-55 with 1:58 on the clock. Smelas added another jumper to bring Wilkes to within two, 59-57, following a King's turnover. Forced to foul with thirty second on the clock, King's made one of two free throws to extend the lead to three to setup the final possessions of play. A Wilkes miscue gave the ball back to King's where the Lady Colonels were forced to foul again. King's missed both charity tosses giving Wilkes a chance to tie with :9 on the clock. Brahm took the inbounds pass and moved pass her defender to the left side shooting a three-pointer with one two seconds on the clock which missed wide right ending the Lady Colonels chances of forcing overtime. Stambone finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-21 shooting. She finishes her fine career as the third all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,649 points. Brown followed with 11 points and season-high 14 rebounds. Smelas added 10 points and seven boards. Marissa Manning led King's with 22 points and 13 rebounds.Print Friendly Version
